Notes From Our Owners

A Note from Kari

I opened East Yoga over 6 years ago with the hope of keeping the east village yoga community together and thriving after the then recent closing of a beloved little yoga school that was housed in the back of the 6th st. Community Center where I had been a teacher. With no business model other than “if you build it, they will come” we transformed a walled up, windowless and never before used storefront space on 13th and B into the green oasis of calm you know today.

Living in this neighborhood for over 15 years, I wanted East Yoga to cater to the community and my fellow residents. East is the antithesis of the “corporate yoga” that many studios fall victim to as yoga chains and fitness conglomerates take over. (Okay, I wanted to be able to bring my dog, Charlie into the studio while I worked too.) It was my vision that this studio be a sanctuary to which our students can escape the chaos of the city, connect with like-minded people in the neighborhood and center themselves through the practice of yoga.

Our style is primarily vinyasa, which links breath and movement. The practice is vigorous and creative with a strong emphasis on alignment to keep you safe and injury free. We have classes to suit every level of yogi that will help you sweat, stretch and strengthen your body, mind and spirit.

By combining superior teachers with an intimate setting we are able to honor our mission of serving each students individual needs by working closely with them, guiding progress and forging relationships. It is my sincere belief that yoga should be safe and FUN.

Namaste

A Note from Katie

 Welcome to East Yoga!

Three years ago, while recovering from an ankle injury, I discovered East Yoga.  I was a true yoga virgin.  I had no idea what a downward dog was, couldn’t touch my toes and thought that I needed to be drenched in sweat to get a real workout.

But after one beginners class, I was hooked.  I raced home from work and scheduled my weekends around yoga.  I was very awkward at the beginning, but I found that East was a place where I didn’t feel stupid, where I was encouraged to move at my own pace, where I got individual attention.

Yoga has transformed my body and my state of mind, while East Yoga has transformed my life.  It is so much more than a place where you take yoga classes.  East Yoga is an amazing community of people that I cherish – the teachers, the karmis and my fellow students.

When Kari was looking for a partner to help run the studio, it was a natural fit.  As co-owner of East Yoga, I can give back to the studio and community that has given me so much.

My hope is that East Yoga can become a sanctuary for you as well.  A place where you can learn, grow, and heal, as I did.  A place in a city of millions of people where you feel at home.

Namaste.
Katie
